What is my dosha? Vata, pitta and kapha explained simply (and what they can't tell you)

Quick answer: In Ayurveda, your dosha (prakriti) is your natural body-mind type, a mix of three energies: vata (air and space), pitta (fire and water) and kapha (earth and water). Most people are a combination, with one or two dominant. Your dosha is a useful lens for daily habits like food, sleep and exercise, but it isn't a medical diagnosis and it can't replace tests or treatment.

Dosha quizzes are everywhere, and they're fun. But a five-question quiz can't capture a system that Ayurvedic practitioners spend years learning. Here's a clear, grounded explanation.

The three doshas at a glance

Vata: movement

Typical traits: lean build, quick thinking, creative, energetic in bursts, with a tendency towards dry skin, cold hands and an irregular appetite.

When out of balance: anxiety, restlessness, poor sleep, bloating and constipation.

What helps: routine, warm cooked meals, regular sleep times and calming practices.

Pitta: transformation

Typical traits: medium build, sharp focus, ambitious, strong appetite, feels the heat.

When out of balance: irritability, acidity, skin rashes and impatience.

What helps: cooling foods (cucumber, coconut water, curd rice), not skipping meals, and making time to rest and play.

Kapha: structure

Typical traits: sturdy build, calm, steady, loyal, good stamina, sleeps deeply.

When out of balance: sluggishness, weight gain, congestion and low motivation.

What helps: regular, energising exercise, lighter and spiced meals, and variety in routine.

Prakriti vs vikriti: the part quizzes miss

Ayurveda separates your prakriti, the constitution you're born with, from your vikriti, your current state of imbalance. A calm kapha person under deadline stress might show pitta or vata symptoms for a while. That's why a quiz on a stressful day can give a different answer from one on holiday.

How to use your dosha sensibly

  • As a mirror, not a label. Notice your patterns. Do you run cold and anxious, hot and irritable, or slow and heavy?
  • To choose daily habits. Adjust meal timing, exercise type and sleep routine to what calms your tendencies.
  • With seasons in mind. Ayurveda suggests adapting food and routine through the year (ritucharya).

What your dosha can't tell you

  • Whether you have a medical condition like thyroid disease, diabetes or anaemia. That needs proper tests.
  • Which medicines to stop. Never stop prescribed treatment based on your dosha.
  • A precise diet for a disease. Scientific research on prakriti is growing, but it's still early.

Getting a real assessment

A qualified Ayurvedic practitioner (BAMS) assesses prakriti through a detailed consultation, including history, pulse and physical signs, not a quiz. If you're considering Ayurvedic herbs, tell your doctor too, as some can interact with medicines.
